Assignment - Currency Design

Congratulations! You’ve just won the largest lottery jackpot in history… a cool 1 billion smackeroos. Unfortunately, the government wants to take half of it. How will you ever survive with only 500 million? After giving it some thought, you say “To hell with this government. I’ll start my own!” So you buy a small island and crown yourself king. Now what? It’s time to establish a treasury department, but with what? Money… and lots of it! You need currency.

Here’s what you need to do:

Design a bill that will get you started. The bill must have 2 sides and meet the following criteria.
• Your picture must be on one side.
• All images must be bitmapped.
• Feathering is to be kept to a minimum preferably none at all.
• You must incorporate at least 1 pattern or tiling image.
• Multiple layers must be used.
• A numbered denomination and serial number must be present on both sides.
• Your country’s name must be present.
• The currency name must be present.
• The year must be present.
• Your name and title must be present.  (signature is optional)
• Be creative!

Deliverables:
• A 300 dpi 6” x 2.75” bill
• CMYK
• A printed proof with crop marks handed in to me.
• Your original .psd file with all of the unmerged layers.
• All type must be rasterized.

Place very close attention to typography, detail and colour.

Steps - Colorize Bitmapped Image using Original Picture

Step 1 - Bring Picture into Photoshop

Step 2 - Open up  your history pallet by clicking at the top menu Window> History

Step 3 - At the bottom of the history pallet you will see 3 icons. Click on the first icon that says> Create New Document From Current State. You will now have 2 windows open of your image. We are going to do the bitmap technique to one of them.

Step 4 - Image> Mode> Greyscale (Press Discard)

Step 5 - Image> Mode> Bitmap (Output - keep default) (Method - Halftone Screen)

Step 6 - Halftone Screen Box will pop up (Frequency - 53) (Angle - 0) (Shape - Line)

Step 7 - Image> Mode> Greyscale (Size Ratio - 1)

Step 8 - Image> Mode> RGB Color

Step 9 - Now we want to bring over the coloured original picture over to the bitmapped image. On the colored picture - Press cntrl + a (on a PC) or apple + a (on a mac) to select all of the picture.

Step 10 - Now you need to copy the image. Press cntrl + c (on a PC) or apple + c (on a mac) to copy it.

Step 11 - On the bitmapped image you want to now paste the original photo in. Press cntrl + v (on a PC) or apple + v (on a mac) to paste it. You should now have 2 layers. 1 of the bitmapped image and your original picture. Make sure both images line up by turing off the eye on the layers pallet.

Step 12 - Using the magic wand you will select the black pixels of the bitmapped image. You must make sure you are on that layer in the layers pallet. (NOTE - at the top of the page header you will see the Anti-Alias, Contiguous, Sample All Layers - Make sure they are NO check marks on them)

Step 13 - You will now have your bitmapped image selected. You need to now click on the original photo layer in the layers pallet. Then copy and paste it. Press cntrl + c (on a PC) or apple + c (on a mac) to copy it.
