With the files below from the in-class assignment; students will be able to practice what they have just learned.

InDesign in class assignment
Students will create a 1 page layout using the following images and text to create an interesting advertising piece. Once students are completed they are to raise their hand and showcase their work to Mrs. Blouin.
* Projects must include all files.
* Must Include a Drop Cap on 1 of the paragraphs.
* All images must be converted to 300dpi and saved as tiff files.
* Must have text wrapping around an image.
Use the following text and image files in the folder to create your assignment.
Assignment - In Design Magazine Cover
If you had your own magazine, what would it be about? What would be on the cover?
Using InDesign, design a magazine cover that looks as “real” as possible.
You can not duplicate an existing magazine. You must come up with your own original idea.
Deliverables:
- You will create the April issue cover of YOUR OWN magazine.
- Your design will consist of a background collage image (must be created using minimum 4-5 images)
- a minimum of 5 teasers
- barcode information
- price
- date
- issue
- Select a magazine that is appropriate to a school environment.
- The information in the teasers must be consistent with the theme of the magazine.
- Remember the teasers are what wells the issues. You will need to create these on your own, do not use what is on above sample issues. It's helpful to look at previous issues to see how they word their teasers. Remember, teaser tell the reader what they can expect in the issue they are about to purchase and read.
- Find your own images using Google searches or any other website that will offer high quality images. Using graphics with text is not permitted. You must create any text on your own. There are limited exceptions, please check with me if you are unsure.
- Your design should be eye catching, using any open space wisely, so your cover does not appear cluttered or unfinished.
Must Include:
- a background collage image made up of min. 4-5 images (this will be created in photoshop, then brought into InDesign as 1 .tiff image)
- the magazine name
- a picture or illustration as the main focal point
- text describing what’s inside the magazine (minimum of 5 teasers)
- date
- volume
- issue number
- barcode
- price

Assignment Steps for Project Set Up - Magazine Cover
There are 4 major steps in completing this assignment.
Step 1 - Set Up For Collage Background
(created in Photoshop, then .tiff file is placed in InDesign)
- In Photoshop - Create New Document - Use the preset size - US Document.
- Bring in 4 -5 images to create your collage
- Once your collage is set up, you will have to change the colour mode to CMYK
On the top menu, Images> Mode> CMYK, if the option comes up to merge layers or flatten, choose NO
- Save as a .tiff
- Your collage is now ready to be placed into InDesign
Step 2 - Create a Foreground Image
(created in Photoshop, then .tiff file is placed in InDesign)
- Find a suitable photo to feature on your cover. Use the 4MP file size during your search so you won't loose out on the quality. Bring photo into Photoshop.
- Create a selection around your image using the pen tool.
- Once you have your path, right click inside the path and 'Make Selection'. Keep the feather at 0.
- You will now have a selection around your image
- Press Ctrl + C to copy secected image
- Press Ctrl + V to paste the selected image onto a new layer
- Delete the background layer.
- Your image should now have a transparent layer
> Make sure to reference the STEPS to make sure you have your image resolution, colour and format set up correctly.
Step 3 - READ THE MUST INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
- there are mandatory items that must be on the magazine. They are listed below in the 'must include' section.
Step 4 - Set up your InDesign Document (created in InDesign)
- set up your InDesign project as instructed directly below.
- note: ALL TEXT will be created in InDesign and NOT in Photoshop
- Place the background image you want to use on your layout (Edit-Place). Do not drag and drop from your desktop.
- Find the fonts that matches best and use. Add in all test (ie. Title, slogan, date, price... etc)
- Use guides by clicking and dragging then out of the top or side rulers areas.
- Create your teasers off to the side on the paste board then drag them into position.
- Barcode can be found online as image - be sure to use hi res image.

Project Set Up - InDesign Magazine Cover page set up
Open up InDesign. A pop-up screen will appear.
Go to Create>New Document.
Another window will appear.
You will notice that the measurements are in picas. This is a default measurement for printing.
If you select the 'Letter' in the page size, your measurements will be correct. You do NOT have to change any of the other settings. Press 'OK'.
